In Home Newborn Session | Washington DC Newborn Lifestyle Photographer
I arrived at the Wilber's home in Washington DC for a newborn session just a little while before grandma and grandpa were getting ready to go back home. I asked them if they wanted to be in a few pictures. They demurred...which is common. My response is always the same: "If you let me take a picture with your grandchild, when he is 90 years old he'll be showing his great-grandchildren the images we capture, saying 'Can you believe it? These are your great-great-grandparents!'"
It sort of puts things into perspective. (And they usually agree to be in a few shots.)
How I captured this image
Since I work almost exclusively with natural light, sometimes I need to get a little creative. In this case, the natural light coming through the large bay window was very bright, but the side windows didn't really brighten the back of the room very much.
In order to properly expose the subjects, I placed them in the bright natural sunlight and spot metered for proper exposure on their faces. I knew that as long as I didn't blow out any of my highlights, I could lift any shadows that were too dark. The play of light and shadows creates a beautifully emotional image.
