Located on the westernmost point of the island, Aquinnah Cliffs offers one of the most spectacular views on Matha’s Vineyard. These gorgeous cliffs were carved by glaciers millions of years ago and stand juxtaposed against the blue sky, turquoise ocean, and lush green hilltop.
In the late-1790’s, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton asked for and received $5,750 from Congress for the Gay Head Lighthouse. This lighthouse helped guide ships along the passage between the Aquinnah cliffs and the Elizabeth Islands, which was treacherous because of the Devil's Bridge, a lengthy underwater obstruction that extends out from Gay Head.
